RECENT LECTURE SUBJECT: Decorating from 1066 to Today
Explaining the English Room

English style is less of a look than a state of mind. Those not really familiar with English rooms think of the English country look - flowery chintz curtains (never called 'drapes'), a few Staffordshire pottery dogs, some needlepoint cushions (never called pillows!) and everything looking as if it's been dipped in tea. In fact English rooms resist conventional categorization, but encompass a medley of diverse influences all in the same house plus a respect for heritage, a tolerance of imperfection and wear and a fascination for the unusual and curious.
