Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Akhilesh Sastry of Atlantic Orthopedics Streams a LIVE Knee Surgery from York Hospital.

This past Friday, October 11th, Dr. Akhilesh Sastry performed a Total Knee Replacement surgery at York Hospital with the use of MAKO ®,  a Robotic Assisted Knee resurfacing device. This innovative surgery was broadcast LIVE to an Orthopedic Symposium composed of 200 Orthopedic Fellows and Residents at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, as well as to several hundred surgeons nationally. The live surgery was a one-way video and a two-way audio transmission, allowing a two- way conversation between Dr. Sastry and the Moderator in the ballroom of the Marriot Hotel. MAKO ® is used in this cutting edge treatment option designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. Because MAKO is still growing nationally, this live broadcast provided an important educational opportunity for participating surgeons.

Dr. Sastry has two upcoming talks scheduled in Maine during November that focus on innovations in robotic joint replacement surgery. Each event includes a light dinner and refreshments, and a Q & A will follow.  The first lecture will take place at The Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine on Wednesday, November 13 at 6 p.m. On  Wednesday, November 20th at 6 p.m., Dr. Sastry will speak at the University of Southern Maine Abromson Community Education Center in Portland. RSVPs are required. Please call the York Hospital Friendraising office at 207-351-2385 or  email [email protected] for additional information.
